What Is Intuition?

By Faith: Have you ever had the feeling something isn’t right? Or that you just know you have to do something? Maybe “something” is telling you not to date someone you think you have everything in common with, going against what you feel on the surface. Or do you have an overwhelming feeling that you should just take that job, even though it doesn’t make sense logically? That is your intuition. The small voice or feeling inside that if you listen to it, can guide you with wisdom and positivity in your day to day life. It is a spontaneous, subconscious thought or feeling – a first impression when we encounter a situation or thought. I call it my “gut feel”, but others may call it a hunch, a little voice, or even DeJa’Vu. 


I have been aware of my intuition for as many years as I can remember, and it still freaks me out today how I “just know” when a situation is wrong, or right, and how it continues to shape my life. Throughout my work as a counselor and therapist, I’ve come across so many stories of intuition, and the consequences of acting (or not acting) on it. One in particular was told to me by a gentleman who was travelling interstate with his family early in the morning. I live in Australia, and the wildlife here is awesome but can be dangerous in so many ways. “Something” told him to slow down and be extra cautious. So, he did.  Not more than a few seconds later, a massive male kangaroo jumped across the road ahead. If he had been travelling faster, he would have hit the kangaroo at speed, and they would all have been killed instantly.

So where does intuition come from? 

We are born extremely intuitive. We come from spirit, therefore when we are children, we rely on the sense that we have most experienced at that point – the spiritual sense. We want to explore everything without boundaries, as we know our soul purpose is to have experiences and seek happiness and fulfillment, and we innocently see the goodness and love in other people. We can therefore connect with those who have passed over, our spirit guides and our souls much more easily (hence why small kids have ‘”imaginary friends”, or see Grandma who passed before they were born at the dinner table). Over the years, however, we start to rely more on our physical senses, what people tell us, and what other people think. We therefore move away from our spiritual side, as we are hardly ever encouraged to use it in mainstream society.  

Intuition comes from two sources – the soul (your higher self) and your spirit guides. Everyone has both these, whether you feel connected to them or not. In fact, developing your intuition develops the connection between you and your soul and spirit guides. When something feels right (or wrong) it’s your higher self and your spirit guides, drawing on your past life memories and your present life desires and ensuring it keeps you guided towards happiness and fulfillment. Spirit guides are crucial to this process, and we each have many, who will be with us for life or come in and out of our lives, to support you lovingly and help you achieve your desires and your best self. But you have to listen and work on regaining your intuitive sense.

Why should we listen?

The why is fairly simple. Because for the most part, we will be guided to achieve greater experiences and joy throughout our lifetimes. However, listening to our innermost intuition is easier said than done, particularly when it goes against what we think we want, or what other people want. Our conscious logic is strong, and we may ask ourselves “Is my intuition telling me what I want to hear?”. Sometimes also, we are so emotionally invested in the situation, that we can mistake self-talk for intuition. Any negative inner voice is not intuition, and in these judgmental times, you need to look harder for that inner wisdom and guidance. Never confuse self-talk with intuition (and as you work on your intuition, you will notice a huge difference between the two). Self-talk is an entirely conscious process where we tell ourselves things (both negative and positive) on a continual basis throughout our day, that is generated primarily from an emotional level. Self-talk can be controlled, and is used by many healers, counselors and mainstream psychologists change the way a person thinks about themselves and deals with situations. Intuition, however, requires no thought or logic. It will just “be” there represented as a thought or feeling, as a first answer without thinking or logic.

Developing and trusting your intuition

Developing your intuition has two separate parts – being able to recognize your intuitive thoughts and feelings, and secondly to interpret what these mean to you.

To assist with developing your intuitive side, try and clear your day to day mind of clutter so we have more room to listen to our intuition. The following can help with this –

  1. Meditate regularly – this does not need to be anything fancy, a walk by the ocean, sitting in nature connected with Mother Earth, whatever calms you and quietens your mind. There are also some excellent meditations on YouTube, which I regularly refer clients to. 
  2. Journaling – start a journal of your dreams, your experiences, your day to day happenings. You can achieve much less clutter in your mind by getting these thoughts and experiences onto paper (feel free to use the notes function on your mobile phone too, this works for tech minded people). 

There are a number of exercises widely available to help develop your intuition, but I find this simple exercise really helps people who are struggling to recognize their intuitive voice. 

Breathe out deeply through your nose and in through your mouth for a few minutes, consciously removing all thoughts from your mind and concentrating on your breathing. Once you feel relaxed and clear minded, think of a question you would like answered, or would like to receive some guidance with. Visualize yourself in the situation you are thinking of, and notice the feelings, pictures or thoughts that come into your mind, or over your body. 

If the answer is yes, you’ll feel calm, happy, relieved or perhaps even safe. If the answer is no, you may feel dread, numbness, panic or a weight on your shoulders (literally). If you start to do this exercise over days and weeks, and journal the results, not only will you start to understand and interpret what your intuition is saying, but you will also see how the resulting action you took affected your life. 

Trusting your intuition can be hard, particularly if you are vulnerable and emotional. But that it is there to guide you and if you can look deeper and listen harder and act on what you hear it will show you the right direction.  It is a natural part of who we are as complex souls and humans
