The Roots of St. Valentine’s Day and what it means for you!

From the beginning of time to love wasn’t easy, in fact it can be one of the toughest and most memorable things a person can go through, as it shows here in the roots of Valentine’s Day. This day dates back to the pre-roman times; back then this day was called Lupercalia. This was a festival that lasted from February 13 to February 15, to avert evil spirits and to cleanse the city.

Next, Latin Christian’s choose mid-February for St Valentine’s Day in order to Christianizes the celebration. However, no one really knows exactly who St Valentine is because there are a couple Valentines in Christian history. One was sentenced to death for preforming illegal marriage ceremony’s after empress Claudius banned marriage of roman soldiers because she believed that a single soldier was a better soldier, then one who was married. This Valentine gave his life for the love of others.

After that, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as Valentines Day in the 5 century AD. It wasn’t until the 1300’s, that the holiday would forever be related to love. Back then people believe that February 14 was the day the birds started to mate, bringing love chirps to the air.

Later, in the 15th century the first valentine’s cards began to appear and by the 17 century people in Britain started their valentine’s traditions and soon after America caught on. This lead to the first mass prediction of Valentine’s Day cards in the 1840’s.
