By Ann: This is a holistic therapy dating back thousands of years using colour energy from light to balance the chakras of the body. The Egyptians were the first to use colours in their life in their buildings and temples.
The Greeks experimented with mixing colours for different cures. If we were meant to see in black and white imagine how boring life would be. It is known as chromotherapy that uses light to treat certain mental and physical health. The seven colours of the light spectrum are used as each colour has its own varying light wavelengths. It stimulates the body’s own healing process and balances the energy centres.
The light hits the retina of the eyes as wavelengths vibrate to enhance mood and overall health and can affect moods and perception. The brain creates electrical impulses that can stimulate several hormone processes. Different colours can help with various physical, mental, and emotional problems to sooth, calm and encourage meditation.
Some diseases are treated with ultraviolet light for eczema and blue light from fluorescent and LED lights can affect circadian rhythms which affect our sleep. Chromotherapy or colorology is the science of using colours to adjust body vibrations resulting in health and harmony. Is this healing or hooey? Is this a new pseudoscience and quackery? It can aid in tissue regeneration and healing.
It is used to treat acne, collagen production for anti aging, hair loss prevention, pain relief, fat loss and stem cell production. Pink for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, blue for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit. We know we cannot live without the sun and sunshine and our body responds to the darkness of night for sleep.Red can increase circulation, yellow stimulates nerves and purifies the body. Orange is used to heal the lungs. Blue is used to soothe illnesses and increase energy. Indigo shades can relieve skin problems. Colour therapy in the home changes moods, and is used by Feng Shui practitioners depending which way they face. For example, green relaxes the mind and body and soothes and refreshes. Violet soothes mental and emotional stress. Yellow is mood lifting and a source of positive energy. Orange is a fire element, and increases productivity, enthusiasm and pleasure and keeps you lively and playful and is good for children play areas. Red is a fire element and added to a room if you feel tired or are anaemic as it is a colour of passion and high energy and use it in a balanced way not as a dominant colour. Blue controls negative emotions and is a water element and reduces stress and tension in life. If you are prone to mood swings don’t use too much. Grey, white and silver are metal elements. Too much gray can cause a drop in mood and white is associated with purity and cleanliness and can be used as a dominant colour. Pink can be calming and linked with love, kindness and femininity and bright pinks can be aggravating. Black isn’t considered a colour as it absorbs all light and can affect people differently. It can denote elegance and sophistication or have a negative affect associated with death, anger, fear, and sadness.
There are two major techniques used through sight and looking at colours or by directly using different colours on parts of the body. Beauticians use LED light therapy in facials to promote wound healing to help cell and tissue growth. It helps eczema, hair loss, acne, wrinkles, and sun damage. Different colours penetrate different layers of the skin. Always check with your doctor before any procedures if you are on certain medications or have a history of skin cancer and eye diseases.
