By chelsea: Some people enter your life and everything feels strangely familiar.
You meet them, and suddenly your nervous system is doing cartwheels while your intuition is standing in the corner screaming, “Excuse me, can we discuss this?”
You may call it a soul connection. A karmic relationship. A twin flame. Divine timing.
And sometimes it is.
But sometimes, what feels like a profound spiritual connection is actually a trauma bond wearing a very convincing mystical costume.
That distinction matters.
Karmic relationships, in spiritual traditions, are often understood as connections that bring unresolved lessons, patterns, or emotional themes to the surface. These relationships can feel extraordinarily intense. There may be immediate familiarity, powerful attraction, dramatic emotional swings, and the uncanny feeling that this person somehow arrived at exactly the right—or spectacularly wrong—moment.
Karmic connections aren’t necessarily supposed to last forever.
In fact, their purpose may be transformation rather than permanence.
A trauma bond is something different. It can develop when a relationship repeatedly cycles between emotional pain and emotional reward. Someone hurts you, then becomes loving. Distance is followed by affection. Conflict is followed by intense reconciliation. You experience anxiety, then relief.
That relief can become addictive.
Your brain begins waiting for the next emotional high after the next emotional low. The relationship can feel impossible to leave because you’re not simply attached to the person. You’re attached to the hope that the good version of the relationship will return.
This is where spirituality can become both beautiful and dangerous.
If we believe every painful relationship is “karmic,” we can accidentally romanticise suffering.
Suddenly, betrayal becomes a soul lesson. Manipulation becomes a spiritual test. Emotional instability becomes “twin flame separation.” And the person who has ignored your boundaries for three years becomes, somehow, your sacred divine counterpart.
The universe may have many mysteries.
It does not need to be blamed for someone’s bad behaviour.
A genuine spiritual framework should never require you to abandon common sense.
One of the most valuable ways to understand a karmic relationship is to ask what the connection is revealing about you.
Are you learning to establish boundaries?
Are you discovering that love does not require self-sacrifice?
Are you finally recognising patterns you’ve repeated in other relationships?
Are you learning to trust your intuition instead of overriding it because someone is attractive and occasionally says exactly the right thing?
Those can be profound lessons.
And sometimes the lesson is not how to save the relationship.
Sometimes the lesson is how to save yourself.
This is where the symbolism of Tarot’s Death card becomes particularly appropriate. Death represents endings, transformation, release, and the shedding of something that has completed its purpose. It doesn’t mean everything meaningful must continue.
Some connections are chapters.
Some are entire books.
And some are the spiritual equivalent of a very expensive seminar you absolutely did not remember registering for.
The important question isn’t simply, “Is this person karmic?”
Ask instead:
“Who am I becoming because of this relationship?”
If the answer is more empowered, self-aware, authentic, and free, something meaningful may be unfolding.
If the answer is frightened, isolated, obsessive, depleted, and constantly questioning your own worth, it’s time to stop romanticising the pattern and start examining it.
Not every intense connection is destiny.
Not every painful relationship is a spiritual assignment.
And not every person who changes your life is meant to remain in it.
Sometimes karma isn’t about holding on.
Sometimes karma is about finally learning the lesson—and having the courage to close the door when you’ve learned it.
