By Chelsea:<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span> There is a strange phenomenon that happens in relationships when we become more emotionally invested in who someone could be than in who they actually are. <\/p>\n

\n

We call it seeing the best in someone.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, however, we’re not seeing the best in them.<\/p>\n

We’re writing fan fiction.<\/p>\n

You meet someone who is charming, wounded, complicated, and just mysterious enough to make your intuition start doing cartwheels. They have dreams. They have a good heart. They tell you about the person they want to become.<\/p>\n

And you think, There it is. I can see it.<\/p>\n

You can see the loving partner underneath the commitment issues. You can see the confident person underneath the insecurity. You can see the healed person underneath all those emotional wounds.<\/p>\n

Congratulations.<\/p>\n

You’ve just fallen in love with a future version of someone who hasn’t actually shown up yet.<\/p>\n

Potential can be intoxicating because it gives us something reality sometimes doesn’t: hope.<\/p>\n

The problem is that hope can keep you sitting at the same emotional bus stop for years.<\/p>\n

You keep thinking, Once they get through this…<\/p>\n

Once they deal with their past.<\/p>\n

Once they become more responsible.<\/p>\n

Once they stop running.<\/p>\n

Once they realise what they have.<\/p>\n

Once they finally understand how much I love them.<\/p>\n

And my personal favourite: Once they get their life together.<\/p>\n

At some point, you have to ask yourself a very unromantic but incredibly useful question:<\/p>\n

What if they never do?<\/p>\n

Not because people can’t change. They absolutely can.<\/p>\n

People grow. People heal. People wake up. People occasionally have those glorious moments when the universe hits them over the head with a clue and they finally get it.<\/p>\n

But you cannot build a healthy relationship around somebody else’s unfinished transformation.<\/p>\n

You can encourage someone.<\/p>\n

You can support someone.<\/p>\n

You can love someone deeply.<\/p>\n

You can even believe in someone when they don’t believe in themselves.<\/p>\n

What you cannot do is become the unpaid contractor responsible for renovating their entire personality.<\/p>\n

You are their partner\u2014not their construction crew.<\/p>\n

Potential becomes especially dangerous when you start using it to excuse behaviour that is hurting you.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey’re distant because they’ve been hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don’t communicate because their childhood was difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey keep disappointing me because they’re afraid of intimacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n

But understanding why someone behaves a certain way does not mean you have to volunteer to be injured by it.<\/p>\n

Compassion and boundaries can coexist.<\/p>\n

This is where intuition becomes incredibly important.<\/p>\n

Pay attention to patterns, not isolated moments.<\/p>\n

Anybody can be wonderful for a weekend.<\/p>\n

Anybody can make promises during an emotional conversation.<\/p>\n

Anybody can tell you exactly what you want to hear when they’re afraid of losing you.<\/p>\n

But consistency tells a much deeper story.<\/p>\n

Are they showing up?<\/p>\n

Are they making an effort?<\/p>\n

Do their actions match their words?<\/p>\n

Can they communicate when things become uncomfortable?<\/p>\n

Do you feel emotionally safe with them?<\/p>\n

Or are you constantly waiting for the relationship to become the relationship you were promised? <\/p>\n

\"Talk<\/a><\/p>\n

Because there is a huge difference between loving someone and waiting for someone to become lovable in the way you need.<\/p>\n

And sometimes the hardest spiritual lesson in love is realising that someone’s potential is not your destiny.<\/p>\n

You don’t have to abandon someone because they aren’t perfect. None of us are. This isn’t a competition to see who can arrive at adulthood without emotional baggage. Most of us are dragging at least one suitcase behind us.<\/p>\n

But there is a difference between imperfection and incompatibility.<\/p>\n

There is a difference between someone growing alongside you and someone you have to continually drag towards growth.<\/p>\n

Love should have room for evolution, but it should also have a foundation in reality.<\/p>\n

So stop asking:<\/p>\n

\u201cWho could this person become?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ask instead:<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are they being with me right now?\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer may not be as exciting as their potential.<\/p>\n

But it will be honest.<\/p>\n

And sometimes honesty is the beginning of the love story you’ve actually been waiting for\u2014including the one you have with yourself.<\/p>\n

Because you were never meant to spend your life dating a trailer for a movie that may never come out.<\/p>\n
